On February 10, 2024, the community group 100 Kids for Change Oceanside marked its second anniversary by donating $940 to CatSpan Ferals, a registered charity dedicated to the welfare of abandoned and feral cats. This financial contribution consisted of $430 raised by the group members, matched by $430 from the Rotary Club of Parksville, along with a special donation of $80 from the Parksville Lions Club.

The donation was part of a broader initiative called Operation: 100, aimed at increasing membership within 100 Kids for Change to 100 members by the end of 2026. For every new member who attends a meeting—capped at ten members per meeting—the Lions Club will contribute $10 toward the 100 Kids’ donation. The February meeting welcomed eight new members, increasing the group’s total membership to just over 60 members.

On February 22, 2024, representatives from 100 Kids met with CatSpan to present their donation and to gain insights into the charity’s ongoing efforts. For nearly three decades, CatSpan has been at the forefront of caring for thousands of abandoned, stray, or feral cats in the Oceanside area. As a volunteer-run organization, CatSpan offers a range of services, including veterinary care, fostering, and adoption programs.

In 2023 alone, CatSpan successfully assisted more than 200 cats in receiving essential medical care. Their effective spay and neuter operations have significantly contributed to reducing the feral cat population in the region. CatSpan is continuously seeking volunteers, fostering families, and donations, such as food and new cat supplies, to support local cats in need. Information about cats available for adoption can be found on their website, www.catspanferals.com.

The donation made in February 2024 marks a significant milestone for 100 Kids for Change, which has contributed nearly $7,000 to local charities since its inception. The organization, which caters to youth aged 18 and under, meets quarterly, pooling $10 from each member to support local charitable initiatives nominated and voted on by the youth.
