Sarnia Council has voted to restore funding for the Sarnia BACE project, approving a allocation of $4.3 million for the year-round health and wellness facility in 2026. The decision, made on Monday, overrides a veto from Mayor Mike Bradley. Alongside the city’s contribution, the project will receive an additional $1 million from the Mike Weir Foundation and $1 million from the Lockwood Foundation.

The council’s vote, which passed with a margin of 6-3, was initiated by Councillor Brian White. In a statement following the decision, Kendel Ross, project coordinator and athletic advisor for Sarnia BACE, expressed optimism about the future of the facility. “Council’s decision confirms that Sarnia BACE is moving forward and that the City sees the importance of investing in inclusive, year-round recreation opportunities that support health, wellness, community connection, and economic vitality,” Ross stated.

The restoration of funding marks a significant step for the Sarnia BACE project, which aims to enhance community health resources and provide a dedicated space for various recreational activities. The facility is anticipated to serve as a hub for fitness and wellness, providing residents with access to essential health services and opportunities for physical activity throughout the year.

The unanimous support from the council reflects a growing recognition of the importance of health and wellness initiatives within the community. The investment is expected to not only foster better health outcomes for residents but also stimulate local economic growth by attracting visitors and creating jobs in the area.

As Sarnia moves forward with this project, officials are keen to emphasize the long-term benefits that a comprehensive health and wellness facility can bring to the community. With the funding restored, the next steps will involve finalizing project details and timelines to ensure that the facility meets the needs of Sarnia residents effectively.

The commitment to Sarnia BACE underscores the council’s dedication to enhancing public health infrastructure and promoting a healthier lifestyle for all residents.
