Ottawa Bylaw Officer Injured in Assault After Issuing Ticket
An Ottawa bylaw officer sustained injuries during an assault that occurred outside city hall on Saturday morning while issuing a parking ticket. The incident has drawn condemnation from city officials, who characterized the attack as an “unacceptable, cowardly act of violence.”
According to Roger Chapman, the director of Bylaw and Regulatory Services (BLRS), the officer was attacked after performing their duties. The Ottawa Police Service responded promptly, arresting one individual in connection with the incident. Chapman expressed gratitude towards a fellow city employee who intervened to stop the assault, helping to ensure the officer’s safety.
Chapman stated, “Our officers play an important role in upholding municipal regulations and community safety.” He emphasized the seriousness with which the city takes such incidents, noting that BLRS will conduct a full review to assess current practices and explore measures to enhance the safety of their staff.
The director also conveyed relief that the injuries sustained by the officer were not more severe. He thanked the employee who assisted during the attack and acknowledged the swift action taken by the police in making the arrest.
As the incident is currently under investigation, Chapman indicated that further details cannot be disclosed at this time. The assault highlights the risks faced by bylaw officers in the line of duty and raises concerns about the treatment of municipal staff tasked with enforcing regulations.
The city of Ottawa remains committed to ensuring the safety of its employees and will continue to evaluate protocols aimed at preventing such occurrences in the future.
