Heart & Stroke Unveils Online Tool to Assess Heart Disease Risks
Heart & Stroke, a prominent Canadian health organization, has launched an innovative online screening tool named Risk Screen. This free resource aims to assist Canadians in comprehensively understanding their individual risk factors for heart disease and stroke. The initiative is part of Heart & Stroke’s commitment to improving health equity and mission impact across the country.
Personalized Risk Assessment for Canadians
According to Dr. Christine Faubert, vice president of health equity and mission impact at Heart & Stroke, the tool is designed to empower users by offering personalized insights. “It supports and gives tips to people they can take to reduce and manage their risks. It’s a really personalized approach to understand one’s own unique risk,” Dr. Faubert explained during an interview with CTV News.
The screening process is straightforward. After users complete the online questionnaire, they receive a detailed profile that outlines their personal risk factors along with tailored recommendations. The report emphasizes that many of the identified risks can be mitigated through lifestyle changes, such as adopting healthier eating habits and maintaining physical activity. Dr. Faubert noted, “A lot of the risks can be prevented, and it’s important for people to know how to take actionable steps.”
Unique Risks for Women
While the tool highlights common risk factors such as diet and smoking, it also addresses issues unique to women. Dr. Faubert pointed out that specific life stages, including pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause, can influence risk levels differently compared to men. “Some of the risks are the same as men and sometimes they will impact women differently,” she stated. Understanding these unique factors is critical for women’s health.
Dr. Faubert encourages women to be proactive in discussing these risks with healthcare providers and family members. The tool serves as a guide for these conversations, empowering users to integrate prevention strategies into their lives. “It’s important for women to know that these risks are unique to them and how to reduce them or take steps to prevent them,” she added.
Heart & Stroke’s Risk Screen tool represents a significant step toward enhancing awareness and prevention of heart-related health issues in Canada. By providing accessible information and personalized insights, it aims to foster a healthier population equipped to manage their risks effectively.
