Health Canada Takes Action, Seizes Unauthorized Drugs from Gym
Health Canada has taken decisive action by seizing over two dozen unauthorized health products from Rize Fitness, a gym located on Smithe Street in Vancouver. This intervention follows the agency’s discovery that various injectable hormones and controlled drugs were being sold both at the gym and online through the now-removed website, phxlab.net.
According to a public advisory issued by Health Canada on March 15, 2024, none of the seized products received authorization from the agency. This absence of approval means these products have not undergone the necessary assessments for safety, efficacy, and quality. The advisory stressed, “Selling unauthorized health products in Canada is illegal.”
Following Health Canada’s intervention, Rize Fitness has ceased advertising and selling the unauthorized items. The agency reported that the company did not respond to requests for comment regarding the seizure.
The seized products include injectable peptides and testosterone compounds. These substances are often misused for bodybuilding, anti-aging, enhancing athletic performance, or weight loss. Health Canada has raised concerns about the potential dangers associated with using unauthorized drugs. The agency noted that such substances may interact adversely with other medications and could contain high-risk ingredients, additives, or contaminants not disclosed on the labeling.
Injectable drugs specifically pose heightened risks, including the potential for infection or allergic reactions due to contamination or improper handling. Health Canada cautioned that individuals who have used these unauthorized products should consult a health-care provider if they experience any health concerns. They are also encouraged to report any side effects or complaints to the federal agency.
In light of these developments, consumers are urged to remain vigilant regarding the health products they choose to use. The complete list of the seized products has been made available by Health Canada for those seeking more information.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by Health Canada to protect consumers from unsafe health products and reinforces the importance of using only authorized medications and supplements.
