Starting university can be a daunting experience for new students transitioning from high school. To address this challenge, the University of Victoria (UVic) has introduced the First Year Interconnect (FYI) program, a peer-mentorship initiative designed to support incoming undergraduate students. Launched in October 2023, the program aims to connect every freshman with an upper-year mentor, fostering an environment of guidance and community.

In its inaugural month, the FYI program has attracted over 400 upper-year students who have volunteered to serve as mentors. These mentors engage with their mentees through various methods, including text messaging, in-person meetings, or by attending FYI drop-in events. This flexibility allows students to choose the communication style that best suits their needs, enhancing their overall experience.

The importance of social connections in academic success is emphasized by Emily Huynh, the associate director of student experience at UVic. In an interview with Saanich News, she stated, “Belonging and social connection are essential for student success.” The initiative targets diverse groups of students, including first-generation and international students, who may find the transition to university particularly challenging. Huynh highlighted that the FYI program provides new students with “a point of contact and someone who’s checking in on them” as they navigate this significant change in their lives.

The benefits of the FYI program extend beyond the mentees. Mentors gain valuable leadership experience and co-curricular development, enriching their own university journey. Program coordinators Daniel Kaiser and Bhavya Arora noted that the initiative not only helps build a sense of community but also boosts the confidence of upper-year students. They emphasize the importance of sharing insights and experiences, allowing mentors to communicate what they wish they had known during their own first year.

As the FYI program grows, it aims to create a supportive network that enhances the university experience for all participants. With its focus on cultivating connections and providing guidance, the University of Victoria’s initiative stands to make a significant impact on the success of its incoming students.
