Starting university can be an overwhelming experience for new students, particularly those transitioning from high school. To support incoming undergraduates, the University of Victoria (UVic) has initiated the First Year Interconnect (FYI) program, a peer-mentorship initiative designed to provide each first-year student with a mentor from the upper years. Launched in October 2023, this program has already attracted over 400 upper-year volunteers within its first month.

The FYI program allows mentors and mentees to establish their preferred mode of communication, whether through text messages, in-person meetings, or participation in organized FYI drop-in events. This flexibility is crucial as students navigate the complexities of university life.

Building Connections for Success

Emily Huynh, the associate director of student experience, emphasized the importance of belonging and social connections for student success. She noted that the program is particularly beneficial for students from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation and international students. For many, the transition to university represents a significant life change.

According to Huynh, the FYI program offers new students “a point of contact and someone who’s checking in on them.” This support system is designed to help ease the adjustment to university life, providing guidance as students face academic and social challenges.

Benefits for Mentors and Mentees

The FYI program is not only advantageous for first-year students but also enriches the experience of mentors. Coordinators Daniel Kaiser and Bhavya Arora highlighted that mentors gain valuable leadership experience and co-curricular development. By participating in the program, upper-year students can share insights and advice about what they wish they had known during their first year.

The initiative fosters a sense of community among students, helping to boost confidence and enhance the overall university experience. As Kaiser and Arora pointed out, the FYI program is about building relationships and creating a supportive environment for all students at UVic.

As the academic year progresses, the First Year Interconnect program is poised to make a meaningful impact on the lives of many students, helping them navigate their initial steps into higher education with confidence and support.
