Plainfield District 202 Proposes School Boundary Adjustments
Plainfield School District 202 has announced plans to adjust its school boundaries following the completion of a Student Attendance Boundary study. The draft results of this study, which began in August 2023, have been identified as a priority for community planning. Informational meetings are scheduled for October 8 and October 9, 2023, allowing parents and community members to engage with the findings and proposed changes.
The study aims to address several critical issues, including enrollment imbalances, anticipated community growth, and transportation efficiency. The results, along with the proposed boundary modifications, are available on the District 202 website. Community members can submit questions via a Google form prior to the meetings.
District officials, along with the consulting firm RSP & Associates, will host identical presentations on both evenings to discuss common inquiries and the specifics of the plan. However, attendees should note that no additional questions will be addressed during these sessions.
“RSP brings objective expertise and a proven, two-year comprehensive methodology to ensure a data-driven, unbiased approach focused on student needs,” the district stated in its announcement.
Parents, students, and community members are invited to attend the sessions at 6 p.m. on October 8 at Plainfield East High School, located at 12001 S. Naperville Road, and at the same time on October 9 at Plainfield Central High School, at 24120 W. Fort Beggs Drive. While attendance on both nights is not required, the district encourages participants to share feedback after the meetings.
The proposed adjustments primarily aim to resolve capacity issues, as several schools within the district are currently over capacity, while others have available space. The study’s calculations also considered the impact of new residential developments in the area and their effect on school populations.
Beyond student enrollment numbers, the study examined logistical challenges, including ongoing construction at certain facilities and the need to minimize commute times for parents and bus routes.
“District 202 values community input and encourages families and residents to review the draft findings and share their thoughts to help shape the final recommendations,” the district emphasized.
A final vote on the proposed boundary changes will occur on December 17, 2023. If approved, the new district boundaries will take effect in the fall of 2026, with additional adjustments planned for fall 2028. While these changes will affect the schools some students attend, not all residents will experience boundary shifts, and not every school will be impacted.
