Odell Public Library Expands Access to E-Books and Community Programs
The Odell Public Library in Morrison has significantly expanded its offerings for patrons, launching a comprehensive selection of e-books and audiobooks accessible from home. This initiative allows library members to borrow titles using various devices, including iPads, Kindles, tablets, and computers. To get started, users need a valid library card and can simply download the Libby or Palace Project app.
The Libby app is available for download on iOS and Android devices, as well as Windows and Mac computers. Once installed, users can follow prompts to locate their library and sign in with their library card. The app offers a user-friendly interface for browsing and borrowing titles. Patrons can search for specific authors or titles and access curated lists tailored by the library staff.
Similarly, the Palace Project app, available on both the Apple and Google Play stores, provides another platform for accessing the library’s digital collection. Users can explore a variety of titles and borrow them directly through the app.
Community Engagement and Programs
In addition to its digital offerings, the library hosts several community programs designed to engage patrons of all ages. A popular initiative is the weekly Storytime session, which takes place every Thursday evening. This program invites families with young children to enjoy stories, songs, and crafts, fostering a love for reading in a friendly atmosphere.
Another notable program is the Lego Club, held on the first Saturday of each month. This event encourages creativity and teamwork among builders of all ages. Participants use a variety of building materials, including Lego and Duplo, to create unique structures, which are displayed in the library until the next meeting.
The library also offers the Pokémon Club, a gathering for enthusiasts to play, trade, and share knowledge about the beloved franchise. This club meets on the second Saturday of each month, fostering connections among fans.
Addressing Challenges and Upcoming Events
Despite these exciting developments, the library is currently facing challenges in acquiring new materials due to the recent closure of its long-standing book distributor, Baker & Taylor. Library staff are requesting patience from patrons as they transition to a new distributor. They remain committed to helping patrons locate items within the library’s existing collection and facilitating interlibrary loans for unavailable titles.
The library has also introduced various take-and-make craft activities, starting with a snowman craft available in January. Additionally, a scavenger hunt will allow participants to solve a riddle and win small prizes.
Looking ahead, the library will host a workshop on Improving Online Health Literacy on February 10, 2024. This free program, led by faculty from Western Illinois University, aims to enhance health communication skills for participants of all ages. The session will cover the importance of digital health records and how to identify trusted health information online.
Furthermore, the library is organizing a winter sowing workshop on January 17, 2024, teaching participants how to plant seeds outdoors in winter using recycled materials. This hands-on experience will provide attendees with seedlings to nurture at home.
Library patrons can also benefit from passes to local attractions like the Putnam Museum, Sawmill Museum, and Niabi Zoo. These passes are available to adult library cardholders on a first-come, first-served basis, encouraging exploration and learning within the community.
With the ongoing commitment to providing valuable resources and engaging programs, the Odell Public Library continues to serve as a vital hub for knowledge and community connection in Morrison.
