Nova Scotia Teachers Union Urges Safety Plan for Schools
The Nova Scotia Teachers Union (NSTU) has called for a comprehensive plan to ensure the safety and well-being of students and teachers in schools throughout the province. This request was made during a meeting of the standing committee on human resources, which addressed the province’s school capital plan on October 3, 2023.
Union president Peter Day emphasized the importance of a coordinated approach that accompanies the construction and expansion of school facilities. While the NSTU acknowledges the government’s focus on long-term investments in school infrastructure, Day stressed that adequate staffing must be prioritized alongside these developments. He stated, “As new schools are built and existing ones expanded, we need to make sure there are enough teachers and specialists to meet students’ needs. Buildings are important, but it’s the people inside them who make learning happen. Buildings don’t teach students – teachers do.”
The need for a staffing plan is particularly pressing given recent criticisms of the province’s school capital strategy. In a report published in June 2023, Kim Adair, the auditor general of Nova Scotia, pointed out significant shortcomings in the government’s planning process. Adair noted that the government failed to adequately justify its decisions regarding the locations of new schools and did not anticipate the demand for additional educational facilities to accommodate population growth.
The NSTU’s call for action reflects a broader concern within the education community regarding the adequacy of resources to support student learning. As the province continues to invest in physical infrastructure, there is a growing recognition of the critical need for human resources to create effective learning environments.
Day’s remarks highlight a fundamental aspect of education: the indispensable role of teachers. As Nova Scotia embarks on new construction projects, the NSTU urges the government to prioritize hiring qualified educators and specialists to ensure that all students receive the support they need to thrive academically and socially.
The discussion around school safety, infrastructure, and staffing is expected to continue as the standing committee evaluates the government’s capital plan. The NSTU remains committed to advocating for the necessary resources that will enable students and teachers to succeed in safe and supportive educational settings.
