Odell Public Library in Morrison is enhancing patron access to thousands of e-books and audiobooks, allowing users to enjoy reading and listening from the comfort of their homes. By simply having a valid library card and a compatible device such as an iPad, Kindle, or computer, library members can easily access a wealth of digital content.

To start, patrons can download either the Libby or Palace Project app. The Libby app is compatible with iOS and Android devices, as well as Amazon Fire tablets and Windows, Mac, and Chromebook systems. Users can sign in by locating their library and entering their library card details. Once logged in, they can browse the catalog or search for specific titles, authors, or series. Loaned materials can be managed directly within the app.

The Palace Project app offers a similar experience, available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Users can search for their library and browse available titles, placing holds if necessary. After downloading a title, patrons can read or listen directly through the app.

In addition to its digital offerings, Odell Public Library hosts several community programs that cater to diverse interests. For families with young children, the library features a Storytime program every Thursday evening, where attendees can enjoy stories, songs, and crafts. The Lego Club meets on the first Saturday of each month, allowing builders of all ages to create and display their work.

Another popular event is the Pokémon Club, which gathers enthusiasts on the second Saturday of each month to play and trade Pokémon cards.

Despite these engaging activities, the library is currently facing challenges in acquiring new materials due to the unexpected closure of its longtime book distributor, Baker & Taylor. Library staff are working diligently to transition to a new distributor and encourage patrons to be patient during this process. They are available to assist with locating items within the library’s collection and arranging interlibrary loans for unavailable materials.

The Morrison Area Chamber recently recognized Miss Katie from Odell Public Library with its December “Because Nice Matters Award,” acknowledging her outstanding customer service.

Looking ahead, the library has planned several community events. On February 10, 2024, a program titled “Improving Online Health Literacy” will be held at 18:00 in the Odell Program Room. This session, led by faculty from Western Illinois University, aims to enhance health literacy skills among participants of all ages.

Additionally, on January 17, 2024, a winter sowing workshop will teach attendees how to start seeds outdoors during winter. Participants will use upcycled materials to create seedling incubators, taking home their planted creations.

Odell Public Library continues to offer various resources, including museum and zoo passes for local exploration, free library cards for children, and access to online databases. With a commitment to supporting the community, the library remains a vital resource for residents in and around Morrison.
