Mondo Duplantis Sets World Record, Thanks Fiancee for Swedish Skills
Armand “Mondo” Duplantis, a pole vaulting sensation from Louisiana, set a new world record on March 13, 2023, at Japan’s National Stadium during the World Championships. After his impressive performance, he celebrated with his fiancée, Swedish model Desire Inglander, who played a crucial role in motivating him to learn the Swedish language.
Duplantis, who was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, has a unique background that blends American and Swedish influences. His mother is Swedish, and he often spent summers in Sweden with his grandparents. This early exposure to the country, combined with his decision to represent Sweden internationally, made learning the language essential.
In a post-record interview with Swedish television, Duplantis described meeting Inglander in 2020 as the “most important” factor in achieving fluency in Swedish. He humorously noted, “That made it actually decent,” emphasizing the significant impact of their relationship on his language skills. During family gatherings, Duplantis aims to participate fully, stating, “I’ve had to make sure that the Swedish was on par — up to game enough.”
Although Duplantis maintains a mild southern accent, he acknowledges that his Swedish accent is “very weird.” He explained that local accents in Sweden vary significantly, which can make his American accent stand out. Nevertheless, he has reached a level of proficiency that allows him to conduct interviews and television appearances in Swedish. When asked about his fluency, he remarked, “They’re probably being very, very kind,” referring to the positive feedback he has received from native speakers.
The pressure to maintain his record-setting streak has been a topic of discussion, particularly following comments from American vaulter Sam Kendricks. Kendricks, who secured silver at the Paris Olympics, alluded to the expectations placed on Duplantis by the Swedish public. In response, Duplantis stated, “I think that’s probably a lack of understanding of Swedish culture to think that the expectations are super high on me.” He expressed gratitude for the support he feels from Swedes, noting, “I have no complaints.”
As of this latest achievement, Duplantis has set the world record a remarkable 14 times. He reflected on the expectations surrounding his performances, saying, “I think that a lot of people expect world records out of me a lot of the time.” He feels justified in those expectations, given his track record and ability to perform under optimal conditions.
This dynamic athlete continues to inspire not only through his remarkable athletic achievements but also by bridging cultural gaps through language and personal relationships. The intersection of his athletic prowess and personal life exemplifies the modern global athlete, navigating both the sporting world and intimate connections with grace and determination.
