Manitoba Schools Welcome Students as New Academic Year Begins
The new academic year commenced on August 30, 2023, for the majority of school divisions across Manitoba. According to information from the provincial government, this marks the beginning of classes for 22 divisions, including the Winnipeg School Division.
Ara Morris, principal of Sargent Park School, expressed enthusiasm for the start of the year, stating, “There’s so much excitement in the air.” She noted that teachers had been preparing their classrooms and offices for several weeks ahead of the students’ return. “It’s so fun at the beginning of the year,” Morris added, highlighting the lively atmosphere that accompanies the start of school.
While most divisions began classes on Wednesday, 14 other divisions are set to commence on either Thursday or Friday. The Swan Valley School Division will begin its school year on Monday.
Building a welcoming environment is a priority for educators. Anna Manila, a Grade 1 and 2 teacher at Sargent Park School, has implemented a unique approach to greet her students. “I greet students at my classroom door by getting them to select a preferred greeting from an array of options posted on the wall,” she explained. This allows students to choose how they want to connect, whether it be through a hug, a high-five, or a simple wave. “It helps build community. It helps make them feel safe and seen and welcome,” Manila emphasized. This practice is part of her daily routine as students enter the classroom each morning.
Students are also eager to return to their studies and reconnect with friends. Shane, a student at Sargent Park School who also assists as a school crossing guard, expressed his excitement about the new school year. “I’m most excited about the opportunity that I can get to make more friends and also to see my friends that I didn’t really get to see during summer break,” he said, reflecting the anticipation many students feel as the summer holidays come to an end.
As the school year unfolds, the focus remains on fostering a positive and supportive environment for all students. With teachers prepared and students eager, the new academic year in Manitoba is off to a promising start.
