The Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) has announced the return of before and after school care programs in South Huron, following their closure in three local schools. A new provider is currently undergoing the licensing process to offer these services at both Exeter Elementary and Bluewater Coast, which is expected to be operational before the end of the current school year.

The programs were officially closed on September 26, 2023, at Exeter Elementary and Precious Blood School, while preschool services at Bluewater Coast ended earlier on August 29, 2023. This decision was prompted by staffing shortages among early childhood educators throughout the region, which affected the board’s ability to maintain these essential services.

Families whose children attended the Bluewater Coast preschool were provided with alternative placements at the Relouw Early Childhood Learning Centre in Exeter. AMDSB has acknowledged the difficulties faced by families during this transition and has committed to resolving the situation as quickly as possible.

Plans for Staffing and Community Support

In an effort to restore the programs, AMDSB has indicated that job postings for childcare staff will be released soon. The board has requested community support in spreading awareness of these opportunities to attract suitable candidates.

In an official statement, AMDSB expressed understanding of the challenges many families have experienced due to the closure, saying, “We acknowledge how challenging this situation has been for many of our families and we are doing everything possible to expedite this process. We appreciate your continued patience and understanding.”

The return of these programs is anticipated to provide significant relief for working parents and guardians in South Huron, allowing for more flexible childcare options. As the new provider begins the licensing process, the board aims to ensure that quality care is available for children in the community, reinstating a vital resource that has been missed since the closures.

The upcoming changes reflect AMDSB’s commitment to addressing community needs and fostering an environment conducive to the growth and well-being of children in South Huron.
