Alberta Government Allocates $2 Million for New Francophone Schools
The Alberta government has announced a significant investment of $2 million to facilitate the development of new francophone schools across the province. This funding will be distributed among the four regional boards responsible for francophone education, aiming to support the establishment of up to 20 new schools to accommodate growing student populations.
In a press release, Demetrios Nicolaides, Alberta’s Minister of Education and Childcare, emphasized the importance of this funding. “To meet the challenge of growing student numbers, we are building schools now and supporting school boards as they prepare for the future,” he stated. Nicolaides described the investment as a crucial starting point for future school developments, ensuring that francophone students thrive in high-quality learning environments.
Minister of Infrastructure, Martin Long, echoed these sentiments, noting that the funding would allow for early planning. “The Alberta government’s investment allows planning to start early so students get the schools they need, close to home,” he said. Long highlighted that this investment in pre-planning enables francophone authorities to swiftly identify potential sites and engage with communities to create modern educational facilities.
The allocated funding will primarily cover essential pre-planning activities. These include determining suitable locations for new schools and involving community members in the planning process. This collaborative approach aims to address the educational needs of francophone students effectively.
Planned Developments Across Alberta
The funding will support various francophone school authorities throughout Alberta. The planned projects include schools in several locations, each under the jurisdiction of different regional boards. Below is a list of the anticipated pre-planning projects:
– Athabasca – Conseil scolaire Centre-Est
– Bonnyville – Conseil scolaire Centre-Est
– Calgary (4 projects) – Conseil scolaire FrancoSud
– Canmore – Conseil scolaire FrancoSud
– Chestermere – Conseil scolaire FrancoSud
– Cochrane – Conseil scolaire FrancoSud
– Cold Lake – Conseil scolaire Centre-Est
– Edmonton (2 projects) – Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord
– Grande Prairie – Conseil scolaire du Nord-Ouest

– Rocky View County – Conseil scolaire FrancoSud
– Slave Lake – Conseil scolaire du Nord-Ouest
– St. Albert – Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord
– Stony Plain – Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord

This initiative reflects the Alberta government’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for francophone communities. By investing in the infrastructure needed for these schools, the government aims to ensure that students have access to quality education in their preferred language, fostering a supportive and enriching learning environment.
As the planning process unfolds, local communities will play a vital role in shaping the future of francophone education in Alberta. This funding not only addresses immediate needs but also lays the groundwork for sustainable growth in the province’s educational landscape.
