The Alberta government has allocated $2 million to support the development of new francophone schools throughout the province. This funding will be distributed among the four francophone regional boards, with the potential to establish approximately 20 new schools. The initiative aims to address the increasing number of students requiring educational facilities in French.

Demetrios Nicolaides, the Minister of Education and Childcare, emphasized the importance of this investment in a recent press release. “To meet the challenge of growing student numbers, we are building schools now and supporting school boards as they prepare for the future,” he stated. Nicolaides described the funding as a vital first step toward creating modern learning environments for francophone students.

In support of this initiative, Martin Long, the Minister of Infrastructure, highlighted the significance of early planning. “The Alberta government’s investment allows planning to start early so students get the schools they need, close to home,” he noted. Long added that the funding would enable francophone authorities to expedite the process of identifying suitable locations and engaging local communities.

According to government officials, the $2 million will be used for pre-planning activities. These activities include identifying potential school sites, consulting with community members, and assessing other critical factors necessary for the establishment of new schools.

The funding will benefit several regions across Alberta, with the full list of pre-planning projects including:
