The Christmas season in the UK sees many workers taking extended time off, and a recent study reveals that those in the real estate sector are among the most likely to benefit from this trend. According to research conducted by CVMaker, the real estate industry ranks fifth for the shortest average working weeks, allowing its employees to enjoy a longer festive break compared to other sectors.

The analysis examined data from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings to determine which industries in the UK provide the most and least time off during the holiday period. The results indicate that real estate workers average just 38.1 hours per week, which is 3% less than the overall UK average of 39.1 hours. Women in real estate work an average of 37.3 hours weekly, while men average 38.8 hours.

Industry Insights: Working Hours Comparison

The findings from CVMaker highlight the top five sectors with the shortest working weeks. The education sector leads the list, with an average of 35.2 hours per week. This is followed closely by financial and insurance activities at 36.0 hours, and professional, scientific, and technical activities at 37.6 hours. Other service activities and information and communication sectors also feature prominently, with average working hours of 37.6 and 38.0 respectively.

The education sector not only offers the shortest hours but also attracts many individuals seeking a better work-life balance, despite often lower salaries. As noted by Nicky Klaasse, CEO of CVMaker, “This study offers valuable insights into which industries might offer better work-life balance, especially over the Christmas period.”

Gender Disparities in Working Hours

The study also sheds light on gender differences in working hours across various sectors. Women consistently work fewer hours than men, with the gap ranging from 0.4 hours in financial services to 3.5 hours in construction. This disparity raises important questions regarding workplace flexibility and the impact of caring responsibilities, particularly in sectors like education, where women work the fewest hours overall.

Klaasse observes that “the largest gender gaps in working hours appear in traditionally male-dominated industries like construction and transportation.” He emphasizes that sectors with a more balanced representation of men and women tend to exhibit smaller differences in working hours.

Conversely, the analysis also highlights industries where workers typically log longer hours during the holiday season. Agriculture, forestry, and fishing top this list with an average of 42.7 hours per week. Transportation and storage follow closely with 42.0 hours, while construction and water supply sectors also report significant weekly hours of 41.3 and 41.1 respectively.

As the holiday season approaches, the findings from CVMaker present a clear picture of work-life balance across various industries in the UK. Understanding these patterns can assist job seekers in making informed career decisions while highlighting the ongoing challenges related to gender equity in the workplace.
