New $50 Million Initiative to Build 77 Homes in Victoria
The Chown Place development in Victoria’s Gorge neighbourhood is set to expand with the announcement of a $50 million funding initiative aimed at constructing 77 new homes. The funding, revealed on January 14, represents a collaborative effort among federal, provincial, and municipal governments, as well as community organizations, to enhance affordable housing options for seniors and families.
Details of the Development
This project marks the second phase of a multi-phase development, which will include 68 apartments consisting of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, along with nine three-bedroom townhomes. The homes will cater to independent seniors and families, providing them with secure, affordable housing close to essential amenities.
Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “These 77 new units at Chown Place will ensure more seniors and families have safe, secure, affordable homes in Victoria, close to the essential amenities they need.” She highlighted the significance of the partnership among various levels of government and the community in addressing the ongoing need for affordable housing in the region.
The development will also feature an amenity building and communal green space for residents, enhancing the quality of life in the area. Chown Place is strategically located in the heart of the Burnside Gorge neighbourhood, providing easy access to shops, banks, pharmacies, and the newly opened Gorge Urgent and Primary Care Centre.
Government Support and Community Impact
The funding announcement was made by Will Greaves, Member of Parliament for Victoria, on behalf of Housing Minister Gregor Robertson. He was joined by Esquimalt-Colwood MP Darlene Rotchford, British Columbia’s Minister of Housing Christine Boyle, Mayor Alto, and Jan Kernaghan, chair of The Gorge View Society. Greaves remarked, “These new homes are about more than housing — they’re about building a stronger community. When seniors and families live side by side, communities become more caring, resilient, and connected.”
The Affordable Housing Fund plays a crucial role in this initiative, providing financial assistance through low-interest and forgivable loans or contributions to organizations involved in developing affordable housing. This fund is part of a $16.1 billion program under the National Housing Strategy, prioritizing projects that support vulnerable populations, including women and children fleeing family violence, seniors, Indigenous Peoples, individuals living with disabilities, and veterans.
The Chown Place initiative represents a significant step forward in Victoria’s ongoing efforts to address the affordable housing crisis. By creating more homes for those in need, it aims to foster a community where residents can age with dignity and families can thrive.
