Canadian Job Market Poses Challenges for Gen Z Workers in 2026
Concerns about job security are rising among Canadian workers, particularly those in Generation Z. A recent survey reveals that approximately 25 percent of Canadians are uncertain about their employment prospects for 2026. This statistic highlights the anxiety permeating the job market, especially for younger workers who feel increasingly underemployed.
On the latest episode of the BetaKit Podcast, Kevin Kliman, co-founder of the Canadian HR platform Humi and now president of Canadian Business at Employment Hero, discussed these troubling trends. Following Humi’s acquisition by Employment Hero earlier this year, Kliman brings valuable insights into the evolving employment landscape in Canada.
Survey data indicates that nearly 46 percent of Gen Z employees are in roles that do not align with their career aspirations. More than 55 percent are actively seeking new job opportunities in the coming year. This situation underscores a profound disconnect between job availability and the aspirations of younger workers.
Economic Pressures and Job Market Trends
Kliman attributes the current job market challenges to several macroeconomic trends. According to him, the ongoing impacts of tariffs, the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) affecting entry-level roles, and a widespread push for a return to in-office work are contributing to growing unease among workers. The combined effects of these factors are creating an environment where younger generations are questioning their job security and future career paths.
This shift is not only impacting individual job seekers but also shaping the broader landscape of employment in Canada. Young entrepreneurs are starting to take notice, with some choosing to establish their businesses in more favorable conditions outside the country. Kliman emphasizes the importance of adaptability for Gen Z workers, suggesting that leveraging advancements in AI could be crucial for their success in a competitive job market.
Strategies for Success in a Shifting Job Market
During the podcast, Kliman shared practical advice for Gen Z individuals navigating this challenging employment environment. He recommends that young workers focus on developing skills relevant to emerging technologies, particularly AI. By enhancing their capabilities in this area, they can better position themselves within the job market.
Kliman’s insights reflect a broader conversation about the future of work in Canada. As economic conditions continue to evolve, it is vital for both employers and job seekers to remain informed and adaptable. The ongoing uncertainty demands a proactive approach to career development and job security, especially for the younger generation entering the workforce.
The BetaKit Podcast serves as a platform for these crucial discussions, exploring the intersection of technology and business in shaping the future. As Canada faces challenges in its job market, the perspectives shared by leaders like Kliman will be instrumental in guiding Gen Z toward successful career paths.
